Before the time of Brendan, Fenit had already given up its wild ways and grown into a respectable seaside village. Brendan was probably born on the wilder side, northwest of the village on Fenit Island. The year was 484 or there abouts. Little is known of Saint Brendan’s younger years. And the stories that have come down to us from proselytizing 8th century monk-eys are heavily laced with suspect Christian piety. It seems he was full of saintliness from the moment his caul-covered head emerged (see note below about cauls), with nary a moment to lose in the rush to bring the pagans to the new religion.
